His knowledge of ancient myth, legends and fairy tales was enormous, but he took all that material out of their old context and used them for a new purpose. This book is not a psycho-biographical analysis of Tolkien, and either is it a tracing back to the origins of the figures and motives in Tolkien's universe. Jung's theory of archetypes offers an important key to understanding the powerful imagery of Tolkien's masterpiece - and thereby a key to understanding ourselves. I have written this book for readers who love The Lord of the Rings, and for those who would like to read the trilogy, but don't know how to get started.
